Sankranthi Utsavam: A Celebration of Harvest and Unity

Makara Sankranthi, a significant Hindu festival, that marks the sun's transition into the zodiac sign of Capricorn (Makara), symbolizes the end of winter and the arrival of longer days, heralding the harvest season. The cultural club Aroop organized a grand celebration on 10th January 2025 at the campus, bringing together the students and the staff for a delightful day filled with a glimpse of the rich cultural heritage associated with the traditional festivities.

The celebrations started with an enchanting Rangoli competition, where participants showcased their creativity through intricate designs made from colourful powders, flowers, and grains which transformed the campus into a canvas of colours, with each Rangoli telling a unique story and welcoming prosperity into the new year. The excitement soared with a kite-making competition. Students enthusiastically crafted kites of various shapes and sizes, eagerly anticipating the moment they could send them soaring into the sky. As the kites danced against the backdrop of blue, the atmosphere was filled with laughter and cheers, symbolizing the spirit of freedom and joy that Sankranthi embodies.

A highlight of the celebration was the rituals of the Bhogi Mantalu where the participants gathered around a bonfire to discard old items, signifying the release of negativity and the welcoming of fresh, positive energy. The cooking of Pongal, a traditional dish made from newly harvested rice, became a communal activity that embodied the spirit of togetherness. Students and staff collaborated in the preparation of sweet and savory Pongal, which symbolizes abundance and unity. Sharing this dish created a sense of camaraderie, reinforcing the bonds within the campus community. As the day unfolded, the celebrations were further enlivened by music and dance performances. Traditional folk dances and contemporary routines captivated the audience, creating an atmosphere of joy and festivity. The rhythmic beats encouraged everyone to join in, making it a truly inclusive experience.

The Makara Sankranthi celebrations organized by Aroop were not just a series of activities; they were a heartfelt expression of unity, culture, and joy. As students and staff celebrated the event together, they created lasting memories that would resonate long after the festivities, reminding everyone of the beauty of community and the promise of new beginnings in the year ahead.
