Festive Flames: Honouring Goddess Mahankali in Telangana

Bonalu is a celebration of life’s triumph over adversity, positivity, gratitude, and renewal. Its origins trace back to a time when Hyderabad was gripped by a deadly plague. The people’s prayers to Goddess Mahakali for protection were answeredand in gratitude, they vowed to offer Bonam annually. Thus, Bonalu became a symbol of hope, healing and divine guardianship. To honour this rich heritage, the Cultural Club Aroop organised the Bonalu celebration at the campus on 18th July, which would preserve and promote Telangana’s cultural legacy among the youth.

The word “Bonalu” comes from the Telugu word “Bhojanalu,” meaning meals or offerings, reflecting the core practice of the festival, offering a special meal to the goddess as a gesture of gratitude and devotion. This offering, called “Bonam,” is prepared with great care: rice cooked with jaggery, milk and curd, served in a beautifully decorated pot adorned with neem leaves and turmeric, which are the symbols of purity and protection. The pots are carried on the heads of women who grace rhythmically to the beats of traditional drums, creating a mesmerising procession that fills the streets with energy and devotion.

Faculty members joined hands with students, sharing stories of the festival’s significance, guiding the younger generation through rituals, and fostering a sense of belonging and pride. The preparation of Bonam became a moment of bonding, where cultural knowledge was passed down and cherished. The enthusiasm was contagious, as everyone embraced the tradition with open hearts, creating an atmosphere brimming with positive energy. This participation breathes new life into the tradition, ensuring that the spirit of Bonalu continues to inspire and unite future generations.
